How to manage your child's dry, sensitive skin

Untreated dry skin can become red and irritated, which can be upsetting for your child, but there are plenty of things you can do to help prevent and manage dry and sensitive skin…

Find the cause

If you discover that your baby or young child is suffering from dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, you should first try to identify and avoid anything that might be causing the irritation. According to the NHS*, this could include heat, bath soaps and laundry detergents, pet dander, fabrics like wool and nylon and even cigarette smoke. The faeces of house dust mites are also a common irritant and collect on soft toys and bed linen.

Use a suitable moisturising lotion

Since dry skin tends to be caused by external factors, products such as creams and lotions can help to control it. Use a body wash specially designed for dry skin and try patting skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel. Moisturise your child’s skin regularly (particularly after bathing) to lock in moisture and prevent further loss of moisture from the top layer of the skin.

AVEENO® products containing active colloidal oatmeal are clinically proven to restore the skin’s natural barrier, allowing the skin to retain moisture and keep out potential irritants more effectively. AVEENO® Cream and Lotion are fragrance-free and are suitable for children and babies from three months. In a recent trial on children aged three months to five years, 91% of parents noticed an improvement in their child’s dry eczema-prone skin after one week of using AVEENO® cream. 92% of these parents noted that their child’s skin was less dry and 91% reported that their child’s skin was less red and irritated**.
